What the campaign has done to make this site usable by everyone, what still needs work, and how to report a barrier.

Citizens to Elect Jim Zay wants this site to be usable by everyone in DuPage County, including people who use a screen reader, navigate by keyboard, enlarge the text, or rely on captions. This statement says where the site stands, what still needs work, and how to tell us when something does not work for you.

The standard we are working to

The target for this site is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, published by the World Wide Web Consortium. WCAG is the standard most public bodies and courts refer to.

This site is partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA. Partially conformant means most of the site meets the standard, and some parts do not yet.

Measures taken so far

  • Text and background colors were checked for contrast. The campaign red and navy are never set as text on each other, because that pairing fails the contrast requirement.
  • Each page uses real headings in order, so a screen reader can move through the page by structure rather than by guesswork.
  • The site can be operated with a keyboard, and whatever you are on shows a visible focus outline.
  • Links and buttons are sized to be comfortable targets on a phone, not only with a mouse.
  • Form fields have visible labels rather than placeholder text alone, and required fields are marked.
  • Photographs that carry meaning have alternative text.
  • The layout reflows for small screens, and the type scale respects the text size set in your browser.

Known limitations

We know about the following, and are working on them:

  • Some photographs carried over from the previous site have short descriptions. Fuller ones are being written.
  • Content embedded from another service, such as a map, a video player, or a contribution page, is controlled by that service and may not fully meet the standard.
  • PDF documents, where any are posted, may not be tagged for screen readers. Ask us and we will send the content in another format.
  • Video, if the campaign adds any, will be captioned. Older video may not be captioned yet.

Compatibility

The site is built for current versions of Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge, on desktop and on phones, used with the screen reader built into the operating system. It may not work correctly in browsers that are several years old.

Accessibility on this site relies on HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and WAI-ARIA. The content can be read without JavaScript.

How this was assessed

The site was reviewed by the people who built it, using a mix of automated checks, keyboard testing, and manual review against the WCAG 2.1 Level AA criteria. It has not been audited by an outside firm. This statement was last reviewed on August 10, 2026.

Tell us. A specific report is the fastest route to a fix. Where you can, include:

  • The address of the page.
  • What you were trying to do.
  • What happened instead.
  • The browser, device, and assistive technology you were using.

We aim to reply within five business days. If you cannot use part of this site, we will get you the information another way, by email, by mail, or in person.
